Competitive Review
Hidden Treasure! It is always hard to find time for this particular task,
but it can really pay off. A best practice of an employer is to request
competitive proposals and bid with some frequency the services that are
performed. This practice applies to consultants, advisors, actuaries,
record-keepers, insurance vendors, attorneys, and auditors i.e. any periodic
service. Again, this doesn't mean that you are obligated to change,
but the reality is that there are advisors who are anxious for your
business and willing to invest and lower their fees to get your business.
And the quality of your service doesn't have to suffer. Unfortunately,
this takes some time. Knowing the right vendors to approach takes
research and experience. This is worthy work for TSP.
Contract Management
Okay, so you just signed up with this big-time consultant. You want to
form a strong partnership and your engagement agreement set up some fee
incentives or included a consultant's share in savings. Who checks that
those goals have been achieved? Just as it is important to have
project leaders on building projects, it is important to have managers who know
the task to be completed and can measure an engagement's success. It is
far too common for the consultant to complete a few interviews and then you
never see them until a report is to be delivered. It is critical to lay
out the expectations and arrange intermittent times to "check in".
TSP can act as that interface or aid you in having an objective expert in that
knows reasonable expectations. TSP can independently verify savings
calculations.
